THE VICTOR’S MENTALITY 10 (The devil does not stand in the truth)
In today’s article, I’ll continue from where we left off last week. Last week, we began exploring who our opposition, the devil, is. I shared that we need to receive the revelation Jesus gave about the devil. This Understanding will enable us to walk in everyday victory over every opposition. As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, we aren’t fighting to win—Jesus has already won every battle for us. Our fight is to remain in the victory Jesus secured for us because the devil is always out there, to sell lies to steal someone away from their victory.
Last week, we saw the devil as a liar and murderer from John 8:44. Today, we’ll look at another revelation Jesus gave about the devil to help us carry on with the victor’s mentality:
2. He does not stand in the truth, and there is no truth found in him.
This is another way of saying he is a liar, but from a different perspective:“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” (John 8:44 NKJV)
Here, we see what Jesus said about him: Jesus declared that the devil does not stand in truth. In other words, he is alien to the truth. He has no part in anything that is true—there is no shred of truth in him. When he speaks, it comes from the fountain of lies. He isn’t just a liar; he is the source and root of all lies. Often, he uses people to lie to you, telling you that you can’t rise above average or exceed certain limitations. Whenever someone says anything that contradicts God’s Word about you, know that the source is the devil.
Remember when Jesus rebuked Peter and called him Satan in Matthew 16:23? Peter was saying something contrary to God’s plan for Jesus. What Jesus meant was that the source of Peter’s words was the devil, the father of lies.
So, what is a lie?A lie is anything that contradicts the work of redemption.
What have you been believing that contradicts the work of redemption? Who says you can’t be free from masturbation as a Christian or from pornography? Who says you can’t graduate because no one in your family has reached that height? It’s a lie! Has the devil told you that a sickness will eventually kill you? It’s a lie!
You can start with God’s truth today. As the Bible says, the devil has no part in the truth. This means he works to keep people from hearing and receiving the truth of God’s Word. That’s why you see some people uninterested in Bible study. When there’s a concert, crowds gather—which is fine. But when it’s time for Bible study, the devil gives excuses to keep you away. He’ll do everything to prevent you from hearing the authentic truth of God’s Word.
Another way he achieves this is by raising disciples and placing them as pastors over churches. 2 Peter 2:1 (NKJV) says, “But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.”1 Timothy 4:1 (NKJV) says, “Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.”
Beloved, don’t just go to church—it’s not enough. Go to a living church that preaches Jesus, one that tells you who you are in Christ. A church that declares your sins are forgiven in Christ and that you’ve been given power over sin. One that reminds you that you are forgiven, not forsaken; that your destiny is tied to Christ, not to some strange place; that Jesus is the author and finisher of your faith.
Another meaning of “he does not stand in the truth” is that the devil is scared of the truth. He quivers at the sight and sound of it. Now that you’re hearing this and know it, you can give him a hard time. You can be the cause of the devil’s continual headache by speaking and dwelling in the truth of God’s Word.
The devil has so encamped some believers that he doesn’t even sweat to bring them down. Once he sows a lie in their hearts, they become victims because they don’t know the truth of God’s Word. Beloved, you need to get acquainted with the truth of God’s Word. It should be so close to your mouth because it dwells in your heart. The devil cannot stand a man who knows the truth of God’s Word.
How well do you know God’s truth? You need to cultivate a desire to be satisfied with nothing but the truth. Seek friends who point you to the truth of God’s Word. Associate with groups that remind you of who you are in Christ. Fellowship in a church that points to Christ as your identity.
In the next article, I’ll continue. We’ll explore one or two more revelations before moving to the third section of this series.
Beloved, prayerfully meditate on these things.
