Soteria and Soterion (The victor's Mentality 43)
I welcome everyone to today’s article reading, and I am so sure in my heart that the Holy Spirit will meet everyone reading it in Jesus’ name.
In today’s article, I shall continue to share on the theme subject: The Victor’s Mentality.
And God has given us a text in Ephesians chapter 6 which has guided our discussion and also made us aware of the weapon and armor God has equipped us with to keep winning as believers. One thing we must know is that Jesus has won the victory over sin, this present evil world, the devil, and everything associated with it on our behalf and gave us the victory and all the benefits that come with it. So then we must carry that victory won for us and wear it like an armor to the world so that we can keep winning, thereby manifesting the victory.
Beloved, don’t go to the world like a loser. No matter what happens, we always win. The worst that can happen to a man here on this earth is death, but for a believer, we die by winning. Don’t allow whatever is happening in your environment to weigh you down. Anchor your faith in Jesus. Carry yourself in His victory and you will see the devil fleeing before your eyes.
So today, we are going to be considering the next armor, having considered: Belt of Truth
, Breastplate of Righteousness
, Shoes of the Gospel of Peace,
Shield of Faith.
And today, I will start discussing the Helmet of Salvation.
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;” (Ephesians 6:17 NKJV)
While I was studying this passage, I wanted to assume that the Greek translation of the word Salvation, Soteria, is the same word used here. But the Holy Spirit referred me to check the concordance. So I got to see that the word Salvation used in this passage is different from the general one we know as Soteria (Greek translation), but the word used is soterion.
When we talk about Soteria, we are talking about Christ’s finished work. We are talking about Salvation as an accomplished reality. That we have been delivered from sin, sickness, and rescued from the hand of the wicked one, and this present evil age. That we have been translated from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Christ (Galatians 1:4). And that we have eternal life, having been reconciled to God.
When we read Colossians 1:13-14, we will have a greater understanding of what Soteria is. It is an all-encompassing victory and blessedness we have in Christ.
And yes, it is done! Glory to Jesus!
We have been delivered from sin, Satan, and this present evil age through Christ’s finished work. Our position in Christ is secure! But now when we come to Soterion, as used in our anchor text, the meaning from Strong’s Concordance is defense or defender. The Greek definition carries a sense of defence, protection, or a safeguard.
In Soterion, we are not just talking about our eternal salvation, which is already full and complete, but we are talking about salvation as a defensive weapon, just like how the Apostle Paul describes it: “Helmet of Salvation.” As we know, a helmet is supposed to protect the soldier’s head. In Soterion, we are talking about salvation in action, applied to your mind, here and now, to help you stand firm against every dart the enemy throws you.
I have shared with you before that the battle always starts with the mind. The devil will always want to try to take you from your reality, which is soteria, and this is where soterion comes into place. It is a weapon God has given every believer for the active protection of your mind and life in the spiritual battle.
My aim is not just to be using or mystifying those Greek words, but I had to keep repeating it because in English Soteria and Soterion are translated as Salvation, and yes, they both are Salvation in the very essence of the words.
Soteria declares what Christ has finished for us.
Soterion describes how that finished salvation actively guards, trains, and preserves us in this present evil age through the Holy Spirit’s work in our minds and lives.
Note: we are not talking about two Salvations, no! It is the same Salvation.
Soteria is Salvation accomplished. If you have put your faith in Jesus for salvation, you are eternally saved. But that does not stop the devil to wage war against you in your mind.
This is where Soterion comes in that, that same salvation actively operates through the Holy Spirit to guard our minds, train our behaviour, renew our thinking, and keep us standing in spiritual warfare.
This is very important, because many are saved, but they are not putting on Soterion, and so they are not experiencing the blessedness of soteria here and now.
Brethren, prayerfully meditate on these things.
