Overcoming Faith (The Victor’s Mentality 39)
By God’s grace, we shall continue from where we stopped in the last article.
In the previous two articles, I have shared the different phases of faith. We have seen three so far: we have seen that the faith we received at salvation, which is the saving faith, must continuously be applied so it also generates into justifying faith and then living (daily) faith.
Today, we shall see another progression, which is the overcoming (victorious) faith.
First thing I want you to know is that faith is victorious in itself. It is this faith that brought us into the victory that Christ has won for us.
So I would say faith is not just a tool, but it is a means and proof of victory for everyone born of God. What do I mean? What I am saying is that when the gospel breaks through a person’s heart, the Holy Spirit works inwardly and enables such a person to believe.
At salvation, when the gospel prevails in a person’s heart, the Holy Spirit impacts faith. That faith is the means by which the person receives Christ. At the same time, the faith is also the proof that the work of God has already begun within the person.
When we look at Philippians 1:6:
“being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;”
Faith is that confidence that Paul had in these believers and that we have now that the Holy Spirit has already begun a good work of salvation in us. When we talk about salvation, it is an all-encompassing victory; it means victory over sin, victory over sicknesses and diseases, to be delivered from danger or oppression, to be preserved, and to be restored to wholeness. This is what we’ve already experienced in Christ.
What the Holy Spirit does is that, through this overcoming gift of faith, we are always exposed to the victory of Christ so that every day, we grow in an experience of it. Therefore, Faith is that supernatural gift that will give you confidence and assurance in the fact that salvation is already yours. That even though physically you are passing through a particular sickness, faith will take your eyes away from the circumstances and focus them on Christ who has given you victory over sickness and diseases.
When you look at this scripture again, the Bible says that the Holy Spirit will continue to work in us until the day of Christ. What that means is that you can be sure to experience Christ’s victory won for us every day until the perfection of it at Christ’s return in glory. That is, there is no season under God in which there is no provision for you to enjoy Christ’s victory won for you.
The whole Christian life/faith spans between two days; the first day (Philippians 1:5—“for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now”), the day we began the Christian race and the day of Christ (Philippians 1:6). And in between it is the load of active working of the Holy Spirit to ensure that we stay and remain in victory through the supernatural gift of overcoming faith.
Let’s look at 1 John 5:4, which tells us more about victorious faith:
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”
Here, we would see that Apostle John is saying that every true believer is an overcomer because he has been born of God, not because he is a “super-Christian” or because he has more faith than others. But the only way we can keep enjoying this victory is through our faith—not the self-initiated faith, but the Holy Spirit-birthed faith that causes a man to see Christ as his only treasure, and then treasure Him as the only one that can save you.
I want to let you know that if you have put your faith in Christ Jesus, you are in the company of the victors. And to be able to lead this life of victory, it is important that your faith is practically focused on Christ. Be occupied with Him, study Him in the Scripture, fill your thoughts about Him, always remember Him and all that He has done as you go through the day, and then cultivate a culture of speaking to Him and hearing from Him.
Beloved, it is very important to set the Lord before you, as King David said, because as long as you are in this world, the war continues—they will always want to drag you away from your victory—faith.
However, you need to remind yourself who you are in Christ, that you have a continuous victory over the world, sin, self, and the devil. And the devil will never succeed in having any control over a life that is lived in the power of faith.
Brethren, prayerfully meditate on these things.
