THE VICTOR’S MENTALITY 15 (Girdle of Truth)

In today’s article, I’ll begin unpacking the different parts of the whole armor of God for spiritual warfare. Don’t forget why we’re in this warfare: it’s not to win, because the battle is already won in Christ, but to remain in this victory that Christ has secured for us and to enforce and extend His Lordship over the lives and terrains we find ourselves in. The devil doesn’t want this, so he launches fear, temptation, persecution, and various challenges to shift believers’ perspectives from this blessed reality to something ephemeral, natural, or animalistic.

This is why the Holy Spirit urges us to put on the whole armor of God, so we can stand our ground in this victory whenever the devil comes with his tactics.

Let’s look at this text:“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,” (Ephesians 6:14 NKJV).

This verse begins by repeating the phrase “stand, therefore.” This means that a person who will stand in Christ’s victory, or remain standing during the “evil days” of temptation, persecution, and challenges, is one who has put on all this armor. You can’t stand against the devil by combating him with head knowledge or calculative principles. That’s his terrain; he’s a master at it. He’s been using head knowledge, cunning tricks, and tactics long before you were born. You can never outsmart him in that realm. But you will always be able to resist him when you put on God’s provision by grace, which is His armor.

The first part of the armor the Bible tells us to put on is TRUTH, which is to be worn as a girdle around the loins. Here, when the Bible speaks of truth, it’s not referring to moral honesty. For instance, I’ve seen unbelievers who are honest to the core—you can’t catch them lying. They always seem to speak the truth. If we’re not careful, we might assume this is what the Bible means by truth. No! You might not be a liar morally and may even detest lying, but that doesn’t mean your loins are girded with truth.

Before I define what truth is, let’s see why we need to gird ourselves with the belt of truth. In Exodus 12:11, we find God’s instruction to the Israelites:“And thus you shall eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord’s Passover.”

This instruction to have their loins girded refers to tucking their long robes into a belt to be ready for swift movement—essentially, to be prepared and ready to go. This paints a picture of mobility, strength, and readiness to walk.

When we talk about “walk,” we’re not just referring to physical movement from point A to point B. Beyond the physical, it’s about how you imagine things, your perspective and view toward life, and how you relate to it.

So, what is truth?
Truth is simply how God sees everything. And how does God see everything? Through Jesus Christ, who is the Truth personified. It doesn’t matter how logical your view or perspective is—if it’s not how God sees it, it’s not truth.

When we align our worldview and perspectives with how God has revealed them, we’ll have the strength to walk in victory despite the devil’s strategies to usurp you. When your feelings, thoughts, and perceptions are girded with truth, it will protect you from loving the world of sin and all that the devil has installed in it. Instead, you’ll love nothing but what God loves, because truth is how God sees everything.

How do you see things? Isolated from God, or through the lens of God, which is Christ—the Truth?

Next week, we’ll explore the implications of being girded with truth.
